LeerBeacon marked a significant milestone yesterday with the official launch of the first two Class 99 locomotives at an industry event held in Peterborough.
Developed in partnership with GB Railfreight and Stadler, the Class 99 represents a new generation of bi-mode locomotives, combining high performance with lower emissions. Designed to support the evolving needs of the UK rail freight network, the Class 99 offers a powerful and flexible solution that will play a key role in advancing more sustainable freight operations.

The launch event was attended by more than 200 industry representatives and stakeholders, including Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy. The strong turnout underscored the sector’s collective commitment to innovation, decarbonisation, and long-term investment in the UK’s rail infrastructure.
Beacon is proud to have played a central role in bringing the Class 99 project to fruition. Through close collaboration with partners, the project reflects Beacon’s ongoing focus on supporting innovation, enabling sustainable growth, and driving long-term transformation across the rail sector.
