Building Future Talent: Beacon Rail’s Work Experience Programme

Posté sur décembre 23, 2025

his year, Beacon Rail successfully piloted a Work Experience Programme for students aged 16–18 who are in full-time education, partnering with local secondary schools and colleges in the surrounding community.

This programme supports Beacon’s commitment to early talent development by helping to build a future talent pipeline, providing meaningful exposure to career pathways, and creating opportunities for colleagues to engage with and mentor young people. It also allows Beacon to benefit from fresh perspectives while introducing students to the breadth of opportunities within the rail sector.

Students completed a one-week, in-person placement at Beacon’s London office, where they engaged with colleagues across multiple departments, including Technical, Commercial, Finance, Legal & ESG, HR, and IT. Sessions were delivered both in person and via Microsoft Teams, with colleagues sharing insights into their own career journeys alongside subject-matter presentations.

Throughout the week, students were assigned structured tasks and worked collaboratively on a group project, culminating in a final presentation to a corporate audience. This project enabled them to apply their learning across key areas such as project management, design thinking, pricing, commercial strategy, technology, and sustainability.
In addition, students took part in a dedicated session focused on CV writing, building a LinkedIn profile, and preparing for interviews, equipping them with practical tools to support their next steps.

Programme Feedback

  • Students gave the programme an overall satisfaction rating of 98.8%
  • 75% reported increased interest in exploring a career in rail
  • 100% felt their professional confidence improved as a result of the programme
  • 63% reported improvements in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills

Student Highlights

  • “Amazing teams and projects, and great advice for the next stage of our professional lives.”
  • “My highlight was designing the train for our case study and the commercial session.”
  • “Finance day—most aligned with my interests, and I met a wide variety of people.”
